Carolyn Mengedoht Obituary

Carolyn Kay (Myers) Mengedoht

Dedicated caregiver of others and lifelong Bicknell resident, Carolyn Kay (Myers) Mengedoht passed away on August 8, 2022, in Vincennes, Indiana, at the age of 82.

Known by her family simply as Aunt Kay, she was quick with a wink and a hug. Aunt Kay was known for easily finding humor in every aspect of life.

Both of her parents passed away when she and her sister, Patsy, were very young. They joined the family of their sister and her family, the late Andrew & Mary Cullen. Kay and Patsy were both raised as siblings with the Cullen boys. Consequently, Aunt Kay had a special bond with the boys, especially the youngest, Robert, for whom she had a special place in her heart.

Kay loved caring for her lawn, insisting on driving her riding lawn mower against the advice of her family until just last summer. She always enjoyed a family cookout, and her fish fries were always a highlight to attend. Kay was known as an amateur candy maker. Her peanut butter fudge was a specialty, and questions were always raised when she insisted that she never ate any of her candy.

Kay’s life was defined by a very strong work ethic and a deep belief in caring for the least amongst us. She worked as a service provider for the elderly and those with disabilities most of her life. She developed special bonds with countless persons in need. Kay had a unique ability to see the strengths and unique abilities in every individual. Before she developed that professional passion, Kay is known by many in town for the many years she worked at Keasling’s Grocery Store, never missing a day of work.

In later years, Kay enjoyed staying updated on the latest news from Facebook or making a trip or two down to Evansville to enjoy the penny slots. But little pleased her more than doing for others. She attended Asbury Chapel United Methodist Church.

Kay was married to Kenneth Mengedoht until his death in 1992. They enjoyed outdoor activities, including camping in Paxton, Indiana. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Floyd and Faye Myers; her sister, Mary Cullen, and her four additional siblings, Patsy O’Shaughnessy, Fred Myers, Floyd Myers, and Jesse Myers. She was also proceeded in death by her beloved great-nephew, 1Lt. Clayton Robert Cullen.

She is also survived by several additional nieces & nephews, great nieces and nephews, a one great-great niece, Amelia Kay Cullen.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday, August 13, at 2p.m. at Bicknell Memorial Gardens.  Immediately following the ceremony, friends are invited to join the family for a meal at the Short Twig Café in Downtown Bicknell, Kay’s favorite hangout in recent years. Please come prepared with a wink and a smile to help us remember Aunt Kay. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clayton Cullen Memorial Fund at the Indiana University Foundation.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.fredrickandson.com. Arrangements were entrusted to the Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Homes Bicknell Chapel.
