Azzie Cox Obituary

Azzie Eugene Cox, 88, passed away at his home, June 25, 2021.  Azzie was born in Vincennes, January 4, 1933, to the late Goldie Ellen (Curl) and Azzie N. Cox.  He was married to Emma R. Cox on May 8, 1954, and she survives.  

Azzie was a firefighter and member of the Vincennes Fire Department for thirty-six years.  In his retirement years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, but, his greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.   He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and Vincennes Fire Department Local 664.  

Those who loved Azzie and now mourn his passing are:  his wife Emma R. (Carie) Cox; and his children:  Joyce (Richard) Ashby; Angie (Gene) Flaningam; and J.R. (Tammy) Cox all of Vincennes.  He leaves behind his grandchildren:  Carisa and Matt Stegall of Huntingburg; Derek Cox; Justine and Bart Schnur of Newburgh; Daniel and Lexi Ashby of Vincennes; Macy Flaningam of Vincennes; and Gabe Flaningam of Vincennes.  Additionally, there are eight great-grandchildren:  Jackson Stegall, Trae Stegall and Nevan Stegall, Emma Schnur, Eva Schnur, and Mac Schnur; Simon Ashby and Ellisyn Ashby.

During his lifetime, Azzie mourned those who preceded him in death:  his parents, Goldie and Azzie N. Cox; sisters, Nellie Stanley and Wilma Moll, and a son, Danny Cox.  

Visitation for Azzie Eugene Cox will be Tuesday, June 29, 2021, 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Homes, Vincennes Chapel, 313 Church Street in Vincennes.  The funeral will be held Wednesday, June 30, 2021, 10:00 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church, 803 Main Street in Vincennes.  Father Tony Ernst will officiate.  Interment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 919 Willow Street, Vincennes.  

The family suggests that contributions in the memory of Azzie Cox be made to St. Jude's Childrens' Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38195.
